The Palomar College baseball team revenged an earlier loss to L.A. Pierce College by returning the favor on the visiting Brahmas in a 12-4 victory on Feb. 18 in the Comet Invitational.
The Comets (9-4) bounced back from their 15-4 loss to Pierce two days prior, pounding out 16 hits in the victory at Meyers Field.
"I tried to forget Thursday," head coach Buck Taylor said. "It's completely out of my mind. We came back and played better, which is all you can ask for. It proves we can bounce back after a couple losses."
Palomar scored in all but one inning, behind a strong pitching performance by freshman right-hander Nick Vincent. Vincent (2-0) pitched 7 1/3 innings with six strikeouts, while giving up three earned runs.
Vincent said he felt better later in the game.
"I left a couple pitches up, but I was hitting all my spots and changing speeds. They were good hitters."
After Pierce tied the score 1-1 one in the top of the second inning, the Comets took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning, when right fielder Ben Caple scored on an RBI single off the bat of first baseman Cameron Penny. Palomar then tacked on another run, as shortstop Ricky Imperiali slapped a base hit past Pierces' diving second baseman Ryan Richardson, scoring Penny and taking a 3-1 lead.
"When we first scored two runs, it gave us confidence," said Imperiali, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one stolen base. "We figured out what he was throwing."
Palomar put two more runs on the board with a Capel sacrifice fly in the third inning and an Imperiali RBI single in the fourth inning.
The Comets opened the game up in the sixth. After a Gordon Stevens (3-for 4, two RBIs) double, Penny bunted him over to third, and later came home on a successful suicide squeeze bunt by second baseman Trevor Boucher. Imperiali followed by being hit by a pitch, stealing a base, and coming home on a hit-and-run single from Tyler Perkins.
Palomar then added two more runs in the seventh inning, with RBI singles from Stevens and third baseman Jeff Tezak. Tezak went 4-for-5 with two doubles, while finishing the week 9-for16.
