Men's tennis plays to strengths, defeats Arabs
|
"Last time we played them at Imperial Valley , we won 6-3 and it was a difficult task," coach Ronnie Mancao said. "(Beating them) 8-1 is a great improvement overall."
The Comets improved their record to 8-6 overall and 8-3 in Pacific Coast Conference play.
The only match the Comets lost came on the first court during singles as Imperial Valley 's Chris Palacio defeated Palomar's Jason Sinkoff 6-4, 6-2.
Sinkoff got the last laugh though, as he teamed up with D.J. Jaehnig in doubles and the duo defeated Palacio and Ryan Pehanich 6-1, 6-4.
Jaehnig impressed Mancao in his singles match, defeating Imperial Valley 's Ryan Pehanich.
"He did a great job beating his opponent 6-0, 6-1," Mancao said. "He's really improved his game putting in a lot of extra time on the court."
Kyle Anderson won his singles match against Refugio Lopez 6-0, 6-3. Anderson then matched up with Chris Jones to win their doubles match 6-3, 6-3.
"They're a young team," Anderson said. "They're kind of like we were last year. No depth."
Anderson can relate to going through the growing pains of being on a young team. He is the only player on the team from last season and is still improving aspects of his game.
"We need a little improvement on consistency on our serves," Anderson said. "We don't stay focused sometimes. That affects us."
Palomar freshman Jake Peek also had a successful day, defeating Anthony Villagragua 6-1, 6-1 in singles.
"I served it pretty well," Peek said. "Got a lot of first serves in. I felt if I went for big shots he could not get them back so I went for big shots."
Peek then partnered up with Travis Albini to win 6-3, 6-2 in doubles.
"We just served and volleyed a lot," Peek said. "The players we went up against weren't very consistent players. We felt we could hit our big shots before they could."
The Comets took issue with conditioning the day before, especially Anderson who said he was fatigued.
"The whole workout the day before matches is not helping our legs at all," Anderson said. "Before the match even started we were physically drained."
Peek said he valued the support the team got from softball assistant coach Lacey Craft during the match. Craft was passing by the tennis courts after finishing softball practice.
"It is greatly appreciated when the assistant softball coach comes out and supports us," he said. "It's a big boost to our team."
Nearing the end of the season, Mancao said he and the Comets will be focusing on the Pacific Coast Conference Tournament.
"We need to improve a little bit more in doubles by more movement," Mancao said. "When we go against higher skilled teams, we have difficulty with people moving around the net."

Was the opposing team to the Comets named "The Arabs" or is that just what you call them.
