Just when they thought they would sweep Irvine Valley College, the players of the Palomar men's volleyball team found more of a challenge in a victory (30-26, 30-22, 21-30, 17-30, 15-12 ) over the undefeated Lasers in the Palomar Dome on Feb. 23.

"After winning those first two games, we thought we would roll over them," Palomar outside hitter Marc Berry said. "Then we kind of dropped off. They sparked up and took off the fourth game. Then the fifth game coach brought us aside and said the first to 15 wins and we took care of business."

Berry led Palomar with 19 kills, boosting the Comets record to 1-1 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference and 3-5 overall for the season. Palomar's Jordan Tarantino finished the game with 16 kills.

Palomar coach Bjorn Dahl said that his team wanted to improve their serving and he felt they accomplished that in this match.
"We're definitely serving tougher when we're getting it in and that puts them out of system, which was something we needed to do," Dahl said. "The majority was serving tough. Serving tough and giving them free balls, which they can run offense on us."

The Comets won games one and two easily, but fell behind in games three and four, which tied the matchup. Then it was on to game five, which Berry said was a team effort.

"We have a lot of good team bonding," Berry said. "We hang out together. We know each other well and know where each other are going to be in the game."

Dahl agreed that they played well together.

"I thought Sam, our setter, did a great job of picking and choosing location," Dahl said. "Our hitters were smart, if they didn't get the set or location that they wanted, they weren't blasting the ball, they were utilizing some roll shots and some tips to get winners."

Palomar will play its next Pacific Coast Athletic Conference match away at 6 p.m. on March 12 at Grossmont.
